ST. ANTONY ALTAR IN THE JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH IN LEGNICA

OBJECT:

A lateral altar of St. Antony is located in the parish church under the invocation of John the Baptist in Legnica. The object comes from the 18th century. In the 19th century it was moved to its present location from the Franciscan church that was situated behind the Chojnów Gate.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKS:

The altar was painted over three times, and the picture of St. Antony was stick on linen by means of paste. When disassembling, there was found an inscription "Neuman 1859" in one of rays of the glory - probably a period of the last preservation. The altar was raised directly on the ground while the floor of sandstone was placed aside it. Therefore, moisture migrating up destroyed the base. It caused a danger of the collapse of the whole altar which could probably be shared by other lateral altars of this church. Preservation works included removal of over-paintings to reach the original polychromy (90% preserved). Gilt place made of gold powder were cleaned and gold leaves were applied. The painting was cleaned, a new canvas was pasted to the back and the face was repaired.
